If you were Registered and logged in, you could reply and use other advanced thread options
With all the shuffling of the WAAS birds recently and the sketchy
reception (especially on the US east coast), it seems like Garmin
could make a tweak to their GPS config menus to make things easier:
Instead of having the option for WAAS as:
ENABLE
DISABLE
...it would be nice and very simple, programming-wise, to change the
menu to give the following options:
OFF
AUTO
SAT 35
SAT 47
SAT 48
SAT ??
...etc
AUTO would equate to the search algorithm used now, but it would
provide the option to manually select a WAAS satellite in order to
force it, both avoiding the sometimes long searches or the locking on
to one with a weak signal and having to intermittently search again
and again.
Thoughts?

Yes, but don't forget EGNOS ;-) Since the 60c(s)x are SIRFstarIII
receivers, I was hoping you could switch them to SiRF binary and have
that kind of control with SiRdemo, but no such luck, they won't switch
even with the latest GPSGate.

I suspect Garmin replaced SiRF mode with Garmin mode.

Jason,
my first thought is, why would you assume that any human knows
better than the system itself? I only want the receiver to work
properly and accurately, and it should please do that without my
babysitting.

It's really to avoid the inefficient search process when a WAAS
satellite is blocked by terrain temporarily. Since the WAAS sats are
very low in the sky for east coast users, the signals are easily
blocked for periods of time while travelling. After a short while of
signal block, the receiver goes into a search mode using up the last
two channel slots to *slowly* go through the WAAS numbers. This can
take a good while to complete... while I *know* as a human why the sat
signal was lost. I would prefer the option to force the receiver to
wait for a specific satellite under certain circumstances while still
allowing the receiver to be places in "auto" mode for general use.
Leave the receiver in "auto" to avoid the babysitting or for users who
don't understand the WAAS satellite configuration options.
