My Garmin Nuvi 200w was part of the recent Garmin battery recall. I
sent it in and it was returned a couple of weeks ago. I put it back
into my truck and haven't used it until today.

When I try to enter an address using the on-screen keyboards,
something really strange happens. The alphabetic keyboard on the Nuvi
is laid out like this:

A B C D E F G
H I J K L M N
O P Q R S T U
V W X Y Z

When I try to spell out a state, city, street, or anything else using
the keyboard, when I press a key, it activates the key ABOVE the one I
pressed.

For example, today I was looking for an address in H*****, Virginia. I
pressed: Where To > Address > Default state was Virginia. Then came
time to enter the name of the city -- I pressed the H and an A
appeared in the display as though I had hit and A. Tried again, this
time being more careful about where I put my finger. Same thing --
press H, A is entered as though I pressed the A key; press O, H
appears; press Q, J appears, and so on.

Same thing with the number pad -- press a number and it enters the
number above the one that was pressed.

I assume this is a major problem for which the unit needs to go back
to Garmin?

This unit needs to have the maps updated, which is not inexpensive.
Wonder if I'd be better off just buying a new one instead of paying
Garmin to fix this one plus paying to update the maps?

It sounds as if your screen needs recalibrating.
Try this:

To calibrate the touchscreen on your nuvi 200 series follow the steps below:

        1.        Have the unit turned OFF and unplugged from power.
        2.        Slide the power switch to the ON position and hold for about 45 seconds.
        3.        A message will display on the screen: Press Dot.
        4.        Once this message displays, release the Power button.
        5.        Press in the center of the Dot.
        6.        Keep pressing in the center of the Dot as it moves around the screen.
        7.        Once this is complete, there will be a message: Calibration Complete.
        8.        Touch Ok and the unit will restart.

Also, are you sure you got the same unit back? I sent in my Nuvi 765T
and received back another one with a different serial number. But they
did go into my registration details and update the registered serial
number, so my.garmin and the dashboard still worked ok.

Also, I had forgotten to remove my SD card, and they kindly moved it
from the original unit to the replacement one.

Thanks for the tip -- that's exactly what I needed to do. I went
through the calibration procedure and now it's back to normal
operation.
