I have a Garmin GPSmap 76Cx; I'm looking at the Nuvi 200W or 260W to
stick in my car on the suction mount to replace the 76Cx, which rolls
all over the place.
When I purchased the 76Cx, it came with North America maps installed
but without an SD card. The NA map was pretty basic and did not
contain the rural areas of TN, VA, and WV where I find myself. I
purchased an SD card, the Garmin City Navigator NT CD, and the Garmin
US Topo CD. I then loaded more detailed maps into the 76Cx and am
very pleased with it.
I see that the 200W and 260W come with North American maps pre-loaded
but without an SD card. I assume it's the same as my 76Cx -- I'll
need to purchase and SD card and load maps from my two CDs to get the
detailed rural coverage I need -- or maybe I could just stick the SD
card from the 76Cx into the Nuvi??
Help!!!!!!!!!
Thanks.
No, the Nuvis come with fully detailed maps. You only need a SD card for
extras like maps for another region. Generally you need an unlock code for
every unit you want the maps to work with. The Topo maps might not need an
unlock code though.
I have loaded Topo maps into my Nuvi 680, no unlock code needed. If I run
both City Nav and Topo at the same time there is considerable error in my
position in comparison to the roads. If I turn Topo maps off then I am
shown to be in the correct position on the road. I talked with Garmin tech
support and they said this is normal. Not sure why. Hope this helps.

Garmin's TOPO U.S. 2008 maps have streets based on TIGER (US Census
Bureau) maps that are notoriously inaccurate, but DO have street
names...
However, the contour lines are generated from DEM (Digital Elevation
Model) data, and are more accurate than the older USA Topo maps...
The USA Topo maps are based on the 30-someodd year-old USGS 1:100,000
digital maps which don't have street names, but the street placements
are quite accurate...
You can compare them here:

Okay -- thanks to everyone. I'll probably order the 260W and see what
happens. Can always add a SD card later if I need special coverage.
