I just got a Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx, and I have one quick question for
others who have one of these (or possibly other 60 series models). Do
you have trouble with the up button on the 4 way rocker switch?

Mine is tricky, if I'm paying attention I can get it to work most of
the time, but it takes more effort and precision than any of the other
directions or any of my previous GPS units. And if I'm not paying
attention it only works 50-75% of the time I hit it. This seems to be
because it hits the side of the hole it's in and has to be pushed down
(not just up) to work. The down button is effortless and never
contacts the side of the hole, left and right just barely make contact.

So, I'm wondering if my unit is unusual (the button was placed too
high) or if this is just a normal consequence of the case design. I'm
sure I could get used to it, but if it's not normal for these units I
might try to exchange it.

Thanks.

I have an early 60C and my friend Harry got a 60Cx last week .. which I
helped him set up on Saturday.

I've noticed no oddities in my older unit, and I didn't notice anything
about his 60Cx which seemed different .. other than incredible indoor
reception.

That is definitely a manufacturing defect. Garmin will exchange the
unit promptly for you.

I've seen a similar but probably different problem on the 60C, where
sometimes 'right' fails to work (but mostly when going from F->G on the
'keyboard' .. I get up, or down instead). I'm on my second (exchanged
because it leaked) unit and the new one is much better but still does it
sometimes .. not sure if it is mechanical, or just flakey firmware.

On mine it's mechanical, the button is almost all the way at the top of
the cutout in the case. So I can't press the button up, I can only
press down on the top of the button, and since even that makes it hit
the side of the cutout it takes more force (still not a lot, but more)
than any other direction. So I'll see if I can exchange it then.

I haven't had a chance to use it much yet since I got it yesterday
afternoon and it took a couple hours for my old slow computer to fill
the 512MB card with road and topo information much of the western US
(no more loading different map data for every trip like with the 76S!).
But I did notice that it had a lock the entire time (often a very good
one) sitting on the desk here in my office, even after I closed the
metal blinds. The 76S has never managed that, it has trouble in this
room even if I put it next to the window.
