Hello,
Due to low batteries , my GPS has lost all its datas ... and also it
seems the 1999 software update ( EOW rollover story) , and so it
cannot acquire any satellite anymore and will not get the almanac.
I remember in 1999 having downloaded a patch from Garmin to solve the
problem of the week beyond the 1024th and it had worked.
Anybody's got an idea where Icould get the software or any other idea
?
I have tried AUTOLOCATE outside for more than 7 hours without success.
I have also tried to load it for 24 hours but it is useless since it
holds its data with a charged capacitor.
(Garmin has given up with the 45 - no support - no update)
Thanks
Friendly

My 45 still worked a year ago but were out of luck on updates

If I remember correctly, the 45's firmware is either in ROM, or it's in
flash RAM that can only be upgraded by the factory. User-upgradeable
firmware first appeared in the 12XL.
Again, if I remember correctly, the EOW rollover "fix" was not a
firmware patch, it was a program that you ran on a PC which set the
date far enough into the future that it forced the 45 to abandon the
saved (but wrong) almanac in memory and re-acquire. If your 45 has lost
all memory, you shouldn't need to do that.
Try putting fresh batteries in the unit (or connect it to an external
source of 12 V) and leave it for a few days to see if it can "recharge"
the internal capacitor. If you still can't load data and have it
saved when you turn the power off, perhaps the unit is just unusable.
That reminds me, I should see if my 45XL is still alive. I've still got
it, but haven't used it for years. I stored it with batteries installed
(to avoid the dead capacitor problem), hope they haven't leaked.

FWLIW, I dusted off my old 45 yesterday and put some batteries in it and
took it outside and it locked on within about 15 minutes. It's been years
since I've had it on.

I also gave my Garmin 45 (purchased in 1994) an outing and it locked
on taking about the same time. I seem to remember that the internal
backup battery has a 10 year life if used normally, but if you keep
the G45 with fresh batteries then this should last a bit longer.
If you have trouble with locking on, then another trick is to try it
at different temperatures. It has an internal self adjusting
temperature compensation table for the crystal oscillator. If this has
drifted over time then it may be worth trying at a different
temperature - try the G45 warmed up a bit and then cooled down to see
if it can get lock at either Saharan or Icelandic temps.
