I just bought an iPAQ and a Bluetooth GPS unit (GlobalSat ST-338), and
I have no clue on how to do what I want with this thing. In fact I'm
not even sure I can do what I want.

What I would like to do is use my GPS unit to GPS the mountain bike
trails that I ride on. And then take that information and create maps
on my PC. I have a program called National Geographic Topo. And there
is a Pocket Topo version that loads in the iPAQ, and I can copy maps to
it from my PC.
When I start the program on my PDA, Pocket Topo has an option to "track
GPS current position". But I don't see that this is doing anything.
It doesn't create way points, and it doesn't create a map.

The GPS unit came with a utility called GPSinfo. And if I start that
on the pda, it does show the satellites that it sees and will give me
my current position, so I know its working. Other than that, I'm
completely lost (no pun intended).

I would appreciate any and all info.
Thanks

You'll need to configure the application to use the BT GPS. You don't say
what PDA you have but in the National Geographic Topo application there will
be an area where you can configure the GPS receiver it connects to.

My iPAQ is a rx3715. In the topo application it does not list my
device... it only lists; Lowrance, Garmin, Magellan and NMEA. That's
the other thing, I can't test my GPS unit from the PC topo application,
it only gives me options for com1 and com2, and my pda cradle connects
via USB.

i will defer on the pc topo question, because i am not familiar with the
program. to connect the bluetooth gps with your desktop pc, you will
not use your pda. you need a bluetooth enabled desktop, and that will
connect wirelessly with the gps. the easiest way to add bluetooth to your
desktop is to buy a usb bluetooth adapter - they sell for about $20 on
ebay. you will plug it in to a usb port on your desktop (or laptop),
it will flash blue just like your pda does, and the bluetooth software
will most likely find your gps by itself.

You will use NMEA and the same com port that gpsinfo used. You must exit
GPSinfo for this to work. If you can't select the same com port then it
will not work. Contact NG and find out why they don't offer the same com
port.
