"my Garmin Oregon 400t does the same thing for $5,000 less." You wish don't
think it will even come close.

R U Kidding me? Inside the house, I get 8 bars. Outside, I get up to
12. It has Tele Atlas maps, automatic firmware update, and Navtec
routable roads, so you can do a road overlay on top of the terraine.

If I want a computer to go along with it, I can get a ruggidized
Panasonic that has a _real_ keyboard, and still have money left over.

Now, it is =possible= to find these on ebay, for $1,800. One just
sold within minutes of being posted, with no others in inventory. It
had only been opened for inspection.

For police car use, taxicab use, mobile vehicle use, great. Then you
need a Panasonic Powerbook or somesuch bullet resistant
kevlar-keyboarded unit that can take shock all day long. But in
reality, even THOSE don't survive more than 6 months under Real World
use. For a municipality getting government funds, they don't care;
they just replace them at taxpayer's expense.

For individual citizens, we have to go to the bank, and I can think of
a whole bunch of stuff I can buy with an extra $5,000 bucks that I
=didn't= spend on a glorified gps.

Like an Irridium Sat Phone, for example, if the constellation hasn't
completely collapsed yet. Or an EPIRB, and a whole bunch of camping
equipment. Well it's _your_ money, you get to decide how to
spend/waste it. It's the American Way, afterall.
