The European Union's (EU's) senior official in charge of Galileo,
Transport Commissioner Jacques Barrot, has proposed that the EU
consider using Galileo for military purposes as part of a drive to
recover rising costs. "Galileo was supposed to be a civilian system
only, but I wonder whether we shouldn't question that," he reportedly
stated at at a transport ministers' meeting in Luxembourg during
discussions of Galileo's development costs ballooning from \u20ac1.1
billion to \u20ac1.5 billion in only a few months. "Using it for
military purposes, for defense purposes, would be very interesting in
terms of paying for the infrastructure and investment."
