I've been looking to upgrade myself from a Garmin EMap to a unit with
WAAS. In particular the GPSMAP 76CS. What I really like about the EMap
is the large display. I can hold it in my hand while steering my car
or glance at it while geocaching and read it fairly well.

I'm interested in comments form anyone with direct experience using an
EMap and newer color screen unit.

How do the smaller color displays compare for readability? Some
reviews mention the need to use the backlight indoors or in less than
optimal conditions. What about in the woods under fairly solid tree
cover?

thanks

I have a GPS-V and was faced with this problem. I have just upgraded
to a GPSMAP-276C, and the larger screen (and voice prompting) to me
are well worth it. The screen is soo much sharper that I can now see
features that were invisable on my GPS-V.

I agree. The screen is the most important feature on a mapping GPS and the
276c is bright and gorgeous in it's detail/resolution. The other units do
not compare.

I don't know where you are from but in the UK you are liable to get pulled
over for this. Even if you're not worried about the cops, for safety's sake
I would recommend getting a proper mount or finding somewhere you can wedge
the unit so you don't have to hold it.
