Hi there. I am a GIS Spec. for a small archaeological consulting
firm. A co-worker just had her computer replaced with one which is
newer/faster, but we are having difficulty with some setting that is
not allowing her to retrieve base station data to correct her data. I
assumed it was a setting or a firewall issue, but I can't seem to pin
it down. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? We are using
Pathfinder 4.10. The problem occurs when I try to update my base
station provider list (which it let me load during the initial set up,
BTW). When I click "update" it immediately gives me an error message
which loosely states: Cannot download data. FTP site may be offline.
Try again later. But its not offline and I am able to update/correct
the data on another system. Any tips/clues would help.

Thanks,
Nicki

Try a few things at the Windows command prompt to test network path
access to the domain name of the FTP site.
ftp sitename
nslookup sitename
tracert sitename

It may indeed by a firewall issue.

You may also want to check your antivirus software. I know with my Norton at
home, it flags "untrusted" programs whenever they first try any network
activity of their own and tends to block it by default. IIRC, in the latest
versions it got harder to find the right way to bypass that filter for a
specific application. Dunno why it gives crap like Internet Explorer any
higher degree of trust than stuff you install, but of course IE would be
pretty useless if it were blocked from accessing the network. Did installing
the Trimble S/W give one of those "This program is not certified as
compatible/trusted by Microsoft" warnings? If you don't sell millions of
copies of shrink-wrapped S/W you (i.e., Trimble in this case) may not have
paid M/S their extortion to get around this warning.

Good luck,
-Marty

Thanks to all- our problem has been resolved. Apparently IE was in
"work offline" mode...I didn't really think about IE because we use
Firefox as our primary web browser, but the PF system was set up to
run through IE. Thanks again for your suggestions!!!
