Like many others have found, the outer rubber band on my 5-year old
Etrex was in danger of sliding off due to the glue going gooey. So I
removed the band. Underneath I found a clear plastic tape cut to fit
the buttons, with goo underneath and on top. I didn't think this was a
seal as there are large holes around the buttons, with the printed
board visible. BEWARE - it IS a seal, and after I got to work with
white spirit and washing up liquid, the fluids got inside and stopped
the display and receiver working. After some dismantling and drying
out, I'm left with a working unit except for 4 faulty colums on the
liquid crystal display. Let this serve as a warning to others!

The rand on my vista was starting to delaminate. Repaired for free by Garmin
UK. Vista 4/5 years old.
