My old Garmin GPS-II+ generally beats my newish SiRFstarIII (embedded in a
Pocket-Loox) to first fix. But not always. QuickGPS is set to collect via PC
broadband at every opportunity which of course costs nothing...

Thanks Mike.

QuickGPS auto updating while connected to the PC and hence broadband is all
very well, but only ensures you're good at the time you left home, yes? Not
so useful for a fortnight's walking holiday ;-)

Very true, but I always assumed that each time a GPS gets a fix it updates
the ephemeris anyway (eventually; maybe not as soon as it gets the fix). But
maybe the QuickGPS mechanism is too dumb to know that so it considers the
ephemeris that it is keeping guard over is out of date even though a more
recent one is available. But maybe this depends on what non-volatile storage
is available to the components...
