Today EGNOS successfully transitioned to a fully operational Safety of
Life compatible signal with the removal of message type 0.
Beginning today, EGNOS can be used for aircraft navigation.
With the availability of EGNOS SOL, LPV / APV approaches can start to
be published, giving Europe the same capability as WAAS gives to North
America.
Actually even though EGNOS is 10 years behind, it is one step ahead of
WAAS in some aspects since it provides corrections not only to GPS
signals, but also to Russia's GLONASS. And it's expected to be the
first GNSS augmentation system to provide corrections to Galileo.
Users with a GPS + GLONASS + SBAS receiver should experience much
better robustness for LPV approaches.
PRN120 and PRN124 are currently in fully operational state, while
PRN126 stays in testing mode.
Hopefully soon WAAS, EGNOS and MSAS will exchange observed
measurements their reference stations, allowing for all healthy GPS
satellites to have higher ranging accuracies (UDRE). If all three
networks accepted data from each other without restrictions then most
GPS satellites would have a 3 meter UDRE which is currently the best
possible accuracy level from WAAS.
