Considering the consumer grade GPS receivers, Garman, Magellan,
Delorme for example.

On mine I sometimes see as many as 10 GPS satellites being tracked. I
know that four is a minimum.

Does the receiver just pick the four which appear to have the best
position, or does it try various combinations and compare the results
from each combination.

Probably everyone else already knows this, but I have been wondering.

This is not a dumb question!

The answer is that the number of sats to track, as well as which ones to
select, varies a lot with the different GPS vendors and models.

Most modern receivers are capable of tracking all-in-view, i.e. 8-13
depending upon where you are and the time of day, then they will try to
use all the signals to come up with a best possible position estimate.
