Does Garmin yet make a portable automotive GPS with miniUSB power &
operation?

In the past, I declined to purchase Garmin nuvi products because they
didn't use the mini USB standard for power and operation. Some, like the
nuvi 300, 600 and 700 series used miniUSB for charging but not for
operation.

The problem with this is that I travel lightly and I only carry a single
set of mini USB cables and chargers for all my cell phones, ear buds, and
GPS.

Because Garmin didn't conform to the mini USB standard for both charging
and operation, I would have had to bring a charger just for the Garmin,
which is ridiculous in this day and age of standards.

Do you know if Garmin got the message yet?
Does Garmin make a portable navigation unit for automotive use that does
use the mini-USB standard for both charging and operation?

I don't know what you mean by *in this day and age of standards.*

Virtually every piece of portable electronic equipment I have has it's
own power supply to meet the demands of the instruments unique battery
and power requirements. "One size fits all" doesn't apply.

I have so many different chargers, that I've had to label each one so
I know what instrument they belong with. Although the connectors may
be the same, the output voltages and Amp (current) demands are all
different. This means a dozen or so different chargers.

The only thing that in some cases is the same, would be the
communication cable(s) for USB porting purposes. But these are -not-
all the same either.

Don't know, but a call to Garmin Technical Support might get you the
right answer.

The nuvi 2xx series also charges from mini USB but operates as UMS
(like thumb drives) without its own power cord.

As previously mentioned, the yes-I-hope-for-it-too de facto "mini USB
standard" sure has a lot of holes in it. I assembled a kit to charge
all my portables and I thought I was lucky to get full size USB
sources to work with everything; it's got several cables.

"Can't have nuvi" due to "can't carry its cable" seems a false
economy.

Hi Bill,
I own a GPSMap 76csx and when connected to my notebook computer it is powered by
the computer not internal batteries.
I don't believe it charges the batteries while drawing power from the notebook.

Check out pg 49 of the manual.

The 60CSx is the same device in a different package, so it also gets
power through its mini USB connector when plugged in. Both units can be
used for automobile navigation although they lack some of the fancier
features of auto-only units like voice commands and multi-stop routing
optimization.

Batteries aren't charged in these units from external power, either via
the USB or power connectors. I'm not aware of any units with standard
(e.g., AA cell) user-replaceable batteries like the 60CSx and 76CSx that
will charge batteries via external power. I'm sure it's because
non-rechargeable batteries might be installed.
