Does any manufacturer make a GPS receiver -- yet -- that lets you upload
your own image file (like a scanned map) to use as the background map?
Thanks for your help.
You should be able to do that with PDA or Laptop based solutions (e.g.
something like Oziexplorer). See for instance:-

A 'real' handheld GPS works with vector mapping, rather than a picture.
Pictures scale really really badly (look at Google Earth and note how it
needs a different picture loaded each time you zoom in a bit .. and
those pictures are big suckers compared to the memory on most GPS
handsets).

I do this with ExpertGPS. I have about 50Gbytes worth of image and
topo data on my notebook. I did this on the cheap by swapping out the
hard drive on an older notebook. However, this solution is only
useful for off-roading.
What Garmin doesn't understand is that there is a demand for higher
resolution maps and even imagery as a map. Now granted if the trails
on the image were on the map, perhaps you would not have to go as far
as to have an image database.

Some of the professional mapping receivers allow user suppled
geo referenced images (DRGs and ortho quads) in jpg and other
formats.
