Greetings from Japan

Hello everyone. This is my first posting. I just wanted to ask to
people who
actually know, about the real possibility of using real-time
DGPS in South
America, more specifically, in Colombia. I'm developing an
application for field
data and navigation and I have absolute
uncertainty on some topics: Our company
is thinking on upgrading from
consumer grade to professional GPS, like the
Trimble Pathfinder XT for
use with our field PDAs. The accuracy advertised by
Trimble looks very
promising, but reading the small print, I find out that the
advertised
accuracy can only be expected after post-processing. The questions
are:

1) Can we use DGPS capabilities in Colombia? (I suspect not).
2) How accurate can we expect the device to be (in real world: under
forest
canopy, mountain valleys, etc) as opposed to advertised?
3) Would a GeoBeacon be of any help there (other than dead weight)?
4) What additional equipment would I need to take full advantage of the
precision a Pathfinder can provide, without compromising mobility?
(carrying a
lot of equipment is not only cumbersome when climbing muddy
jungle mountain
trails, but it tends to lure thieves and other unwelcome
attention).

We will work with 1:10 000 maps so precision under 5 m has to be
assured.

Any help/comments/suggestions will be very appreciated! I'm moslty at a
loss
here. In Japan nobody has provided me with a real answer yet.

Satellite DGPS signals are available Central and South America (From
Central Mexico, South) for receivers such as the Trimble Pro XRS. Sub
meter accuracy under conditions of little signal obstruction.
