Okay, I'm confused as to the correct way of creating a route so that
the GPS does not recalculate what I have painstakingly planned out in
City Select. I noticed this post-- albeit a year old:
Garmin was quoted to have said: "When you create a route within
MapSource and send that information to the 60CS
or 60C, only the points within the route are transferred. When you
activate a route or begin to navigate a route the 60C pulls the points
and creates a route
based upon the points that were transferred from MapSource. This is due
to the
60C/CS being a true handheld unit and not being a true automotive unit.
A
majority of the time the route will mimic the route that you created in
MapSource, however if you are not at the exact starting point or if you
do not
have all of the incorporating maps loaded the route will be adjusted to
reflect
this."
So then, how am I supposed to create a route in City Select. I am now
using a 276C. If I only use the route tool when creating a route, am I
to believe when I transfer it to the 276C, it might recalculate the
route, if for example, I mistakingly slip off route?
I recently made a wrong turn on a trip, and the GPS refused to allow me
to continue to follow around a pennisula as I had planned for a scenic
ride. Instead, it just jumped ahead the to next section of the ride.
What is a GPS believer to do?

Create explicit waypoints at the intersections or locations that you
intend to pass through and use them as the intermediate points in the
route you build. Then transfer the route and the waypoints to your GPS.
Since the waypoints are part of the route, if you go off route the GPS
will recalculate to take you to the next waypoint in the list rather
than recalc to the destination directly.

Just so that I understand you correctly, when I'm creating the route in
City Select using the route tool, I should also create some strategic
waypoints along the "must pass areas" I wish to see. Then, while I'm
using the route tool, do I click on these newly created waypoints when
I'm building the route? This way, the waypoints are actually part of
the route?
(my goal is that, as a motorcyclist, I'm trying to take some back
roads. Currently, if I miss a turn along my route, the GPS
recalculates and jumps to the simplist method to get me to my final
destination.-- no good for me)
I also notice on the GPS unit itself, that it has an option to set
recalculation to off or on. Should I turn that option off, so that it
does not make these new decisions for me? Thinking being that If I'm
off route, I need to find my way back on the originally intended route.
If you or anyone can comfirm this thinking, I'd much appreciate it. I
know this unit can do what I want... the user (me) simply needs to
program it correctly, and that's the help I need!
I had the same problem with the 60C. Darn thing would override my
planned route and come up with something else.
The solution is what the other poster said... create lots of "via"
points along the route. These are not necessarily waypoints (some
point of interest)... they are just pointers to keep you on track. The
manufacturer calls them "via points".
The more via points you click into your route plan the more resistant
it will be to recalculation. Make sure to click a via point just
beyond a turn that you had planned. That way, the GPS has to follow
your planned turns.
Takes 1-2 more minutes when creating a route on Mapsource... but sure
beats the alternative of have the GPS come up with some entirely
different route.

Correct.

Yes.

Leave it on. It should auto-recacl to the "next" waypoint in your route
list if you go off course (and as this is only a partial route
recalculation, it should happen pretty quickly, too).
