I've noticed an odd pattern with my GPSmap 76S and wanted to see if
anyone else has seen this:
I've owned my 76S for about 2.5 years and use it all the time on my
kayak and offroad hiking. In the years I've used the 76S (hundreds of
operating hours) it's never given me any problems. However, recently
I've been traveling more and have begun noticing a pattern with the
unit locking up. The first repeatable pattern in hard lockups are
while on on an airliner just before takeoff. This has happened at
least 5 times, so the pattern is pretty solid. The second pattern is
while using the 76S on a cruise ship-- 2 trips about 10 months apart.
2-3 times on each cruise I'd use the unit on the top deck near the bow
of the ship to see where we were... both trips in the central Gulf of
Mexico. The unit would work fine for a few minutes and invariably
lockup-- pretty annoying. On the cruises, the unit locked up
regardless of whether WAAS was enabled/disabled. The last cruise was
about 2 months ago and the 76S has worked flawlessly since.
So my thought is that a rather strong transmitter on the plane and
ship is causing the unit to lockup. I can't think of anything else
that would cause such a repeatable pattern in those situations. Has
anyone else seen this? Can anyone confirm the cause? Thanks!

I have seen something similar with my 76s.
I use it on my motorcycle. I have a device on the bike that wirelessly
transmits the status of my radar detector to my helmet. Inside the
helmet is a receiver and LED light. That transmitter of this device
causes the 76s to loose satellite lock (with full signals on 4-12 sats).
I have also had the 76s lock up, become unresponsive to buttons, etc.
