I have a very old Magellan Meridian GPS (yellow plastic with black
rubber, monochrome screen).
I have a serial cable for connecting my computer to the GPS.
I currently don't have any software for interfacing with the GPS. What
I want is a program that will allow me to download the 'ant trail' data
currently stored in the GPS. Once I get the raw data (presumably in a
documented format) I then plan to process the data in a program that I
will write (e.g. keeping statistics about how long various segments of
my work commute take to traverse).
I'm expecting I can download the ant trail data and I will get a bunch
of data points
(latitude, longitude, time).
Is there a free program I can download from the internet that will
allow me to do this simple task? I don't want to upload map data to my
GPS, I don't want a visual representation of the data I download, I
just want to pull the data off the GPS.
I've tried googling a bit but haven't turned anything useful up yet.
Cheers,

Hi Jonathan,
http://www.gpsinformation.org/ronh/#g7towin
is free, and
http://www.gpsu.co.uk/
is shareware.
Both can output ascii text files from which you can extract what
you want.

Eddy listed two good ones, here is a page with a number of other third
party softwares for doing what you ask.

I purchased the full version of GPS Utility http://www.gpsu.co.uk/ a
couple of years ago and use it regularly. The developer of that
software is interactive with users and seems to strive to keep the
software current with changing hardware and software.
