If I record a route in a track log can I somehow follow the route back to
the original starting point?

The track data on the zumos is what is called the Trip Log, the track
data is not a route yet as it is saved but it can be saved as a route.
Try that and see what you get.
The Trip Log is the last 10,000 points collected, you might try going
back on the display track to a point you want to return to and simply
choosing it as a Goto destination. Do that and see what you get.
It is sometimes better to save the destination as a waypoint and not
bother with the route. The waypoint, Favorite, or whatever the word of
the week is for a lat long position can then be chosen as a destination
from any starting point. If you choose to activate a route from the
wrong side or approach it may not be an efficient way to get to the end
of the route.
Did you get a manual?
