I'm looking for a serial to usb adapter for my sportrak pro, looks like the
magellan one is no longer available. Does it have to be something special or
will any universal adapter work? Thanks in advance

Any serial to USB adapter should work. That said, there are some
implementations that are more trouble some than others. If you look for
one that is based on the Prologic PL-2303 or another mainstream chip and
that comes with drivers for your operating system, you should be okay.
The Magellan one was grossly over priced. You'll find all kinds of them
for sale on eBay, and the mainstream brands like Belkin and Keyspan can
be found at some of the big box stores.

Thank you Mr. Erbes, I thought the Magellan may have some special wiring
unlike the universal adapters.

A serial port is a serial port. The USB to serial conversion is invisible
to what is connected to the end of the serial cable.
