Greetings all,

I purchased a Roadmate 2200T about two months ago. It worked great for
about a month and then died. It was completely dead. When you pressed the
power button, absolutely nothing would happen. This was the case whether I
was on the internal batteries or the external wall charger or cigarette
adapter. So I returned it to Magellan and they repaired and returned it to
me. It worked fine again for about two weeks and then failed again in
exactly the same way. Again I called Magellan on the phone and this time
they offered to upgrade me to a 2500T Crossover free of charge. I received
the 2500T yesterday and I really like it but I am worried that it might fail
too. It may be that the original 2200T was defective but I am concerned
that maybe something I did caused it to fail and thus the same thing might
happen to the 2500T. I use the unit almost entirely in the car. I leave it
in the car all the time and of course it does get somewhat hot in the
vehicle when it is parked in the sun all day. I wondered if perhaps the
heat in an enclosed vehicle might damage these units. The other thing that
crossed my mind is that the unit is always plugged into the cigarette
lighter and I wondered if maybe there could be a destructive voltage spike
when starting the vehicle. I would expect that these kind of considerations
would figure into the design of a piece of electronic equipment that is
highly likely to be used in a vehicle but I don't know if maybe these units
are more fragile than I would have predicted. The bottom line is that I
have the new 2500T and I really like it; I just don't want to go out to the
car one day and find that this one too has died. Does anyone have any
thoughts on this?

Thank you,

--Jim

I own the same unit (2200T) and using it for several months without any
incidence other than map issue. Anyway, I don't think keeping it plugged in
to your cigarette light all the time is a problem. When it is inactive power
goes off automatically after few minutes. However, heat (rather extreme
heat) inside a car could be an issue. Mine's plugged in but always in the
shade. Thus far, no problem. _JOE

I've owned a 2500T for about 8 months now. I have left it in the car in
the heat a few times, but I try not to do it. I haven't had any problems
with it, besides the occasional map error and a bug that caused it to
lock up occasionally. I believe this has been fixed with the latest
software release.

At the least I'd remove it from the cradle and put it in the glove box
or under the seat when it's parked, where the sun won't be on it.

I doubt that having it plugged in while starting the car would be a
problem, although my car shuts off the cigarette lighter when the key is
off and when it is starting. The car power adapter is pretty good
though, it converts the 12-14 volt or more car current to a regulated 5
volts, so I expect it would handle any voltage variations well.

I've had a 2200T since June and have used it extensively, both on
batteries and plugged into the car charger. However, I never leave
for extended periods in the windshield cradle. Certainly, it'll get
really hot there and heat is never good for electronics. I don't
leave it there when the car is unattended because it's like a big sign
that says, "Hey, throw a brick throught the side window and steal me!"

Even when I leave it in my car to charge up (I don't have a wall
charger) I stick it in my glove compartment or the console
compartment. Keeps it out of sight and cooler.

Ours did something similar but we had accidently hit the hold button
so it acted like it was dead. Hit the hold button again and it
started working again. We have a 2200t updated to version 1.72 and
love it.
