I have downloaded the firmware update from Magellan and it tells me that
loading the update erases my address book and the I should back up any
addresses that are important. I cannot figure out how to get any
information OFF my Crossover. The utilty that Magellan supplies allows me
to import files as CSV and load them onto the SD memory card but I have not
found any way to access the waypoints etc. that I have programmed into the
onboard memory of the Xover.

My second question is if anyone has downloaded or bought Topo Canada for the
Crossover. I get different messages from Magellan. The website tells me
that I can download Topo Canada and that it is compatible with the Crossover
but Magellan support emailed me once and told me that no updates were
available for my unit and again later and said that I should buy the SD card
with Topo Canada. I have tried a half dozen times and I cannot get through
to technical support at Magellan.

One other question I have is about the Reset button. I have been having
some issues with the unit freezing up and Magellan is telling me to try
resetting. I cannot find anything in the so called manual that tells me
whether resetting will erase my address book along with all the waypoints I
have set during my trips.

One thing is clear: Support sucks at Magellan. They really need to get
their act together and I am regretting choosing their product now. If I
don't get some resolution on this soon, I will be warning everyone who asks
about my unit to stay clear of Magellan.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Stephen

In my upgrading experience, I have never lost any information on the
CrossOver, despite their claims otherwise. This is not to say it will not
happen, but it has not happened to me. I have an SD card and have backed up
my information to that through the CrossOver backup option every time just
in case.

The Topo Canada (regional) is the only topo map that will work with the
CrossOver, the Topo Canada CD or SD products are only compatible with the
Exporist and other handheld series. I had no problems with the topo
download and installation to my SD card (get at least 1 GB, most regions are
about 250 MB) but there is currently no way to view these maps on the
computer, which is a bit of a problem. They have released their
VantagePoint software (beta) which has a lot of potential and may eventually
be CrossOver compatible, but right now we are stuck with the CrossOver
living a separate life from our PC except for upgrades.

I had to reset once and did not lose anything. Of course, backup to SD card
first.

Thanks Tim,

I used the Backup and Restore options in user options and it seems to have
worked. It may be, as you say, just that the update did not actually
overwrite my address book but in either case I am updated to Crossover
v2.14.

I'm not clear on whether I can download Topo Canada for the Crossover. Did
you get the Download, SD or CD to work on your Crossover?

This is the link to the downloadable Topo Canada regions:
http://www.magellangps.com/products/map.asp?tab=0&PRODID=1759
To the best of my experience, this is the only topo map product that works
with the CrossOver. The CrossOver seems to be incompatible with everything
else Magellan, map wise. Perhaps with Vantage Point that will change, but
not yet.

Thanks Tim and Merry Christmas.

Here is where my confusion on the Topo Canada Maps comes from:

The website says this;

"Topo maps add powerful capabilities to your SD card*-compatible Magellan
CrossoverGPS and eXplorist products. Ready for download, these maps provide
elevation contours, detailed streets and extensive points of interest. "

Email from their technical support says this:

"Regarding the map updates:

We would like to inform you that the mapsend topo canada is not compatible
with your GPS unit. If you require crossover updates for canada, we would
request you to purchase a topo canada SD card from our sales department at
1-909-394-5000, by placing an order and to assist you further to solve your
issue."

I have tried a few times to contact them by phone but I have yet to actually
get to a real person. I just wanted to hear from someone who had actually
purchased Topo Canada in some form or another and made it work on their
Crossover. There is no returning the maps if they do not work so I want to
be sure.

Even the price is not clear from the website:

MapSend Topo Canada
If you love to vacation, hike, fish or camp in Canada these highly-detailed
topo maps make navigating your adventure easy. Details include streets,
waterways, parks, and tens of thousands of points of interest for shopping,
fuel, amenities and more. More

Price: $115.00

They also say:

Topo Canada

Topo maps add powerful capabilities to your SD card*-compatible Magellan
CrossoverGPS and eXplorist products. Ready for download, these maps provide
elevation contours, detailed streets and extensive points of interest.
Choose up to five Canadian regions. Use MapSend Lite V2 to explore 3D maps
on your PC (eXplorist

Featured Highlights
a.. View Elevation contours
b.. Searchable points of interest
c.. Includes highways and city streets
Price: $49.99

This is probably for only one region but maybe the $115 is for all the
regions which I would go for. Magellan really needs to get their act
together and be clear about what they are saying. Anyway thanks again for
the input.
