I'm just using the preinstalled North American maps that came
preinstalled on my TomTom One XL and I still have space left on the
preinstalled memory card. Is there any point in adding an extra
memory card? Will I get faster performance or any other improved
behavior from adding a memory card?

reason for a bigger card is if you ever want to install another, or an
updated map. There.s generally only space for one map on the supplied
card and you would have to delete it before loading another. Provided
you don't overfill the card with POI lists, Itineraries &c most updates
other than maps should go on ok. It can be a bit tricky transferring to
a new card, allow around half a day to get it right
You only need to use an SD card if you need to install a map that is larger
than the internal memory of your unit. Or you would like to have the
Western Europe map installed, without having to delete the North America map
from your internal memory.
The card must contain all the operating software plus a map. When you
insert the card, you bypass the internal memory and the unit boots from the
card. Remove the card and it reverts to your original installation.
