Is there a GPS unit for the car that will allow me to plan a route on my PC
and transfer it to the GPS unit? That way I can take the route that I want
even if it isn't the shortest route, and have the GPS keep me on course -
and get me back on course if I detour.
Thanks,

But will the receiver actually honor the route?
My Garmin 76CSx (a handheld receiver, not an in-car unit) does
auto-routing. If I create a route on my PC using Garmin's MapSource
application with waypoints only at the start and end, and then upload
that "route" to the receiver, the receiver will, more often than not,
create a different route when I set it to navigate.
If I want the receiver's route to at least approximate the
PC-generated route, I have to insert waypoints or vias at every
important (to me) intersection or turn.

In that case I would prefer to convert the route to a track, and use the
backtrack function. That way your 76CSx is not polluted with hundreds of
waypoints.
I know it can be done that way while traveling via roads, but I've never
done that. I only use the 60Cx for walking and bike. And for getting to the
starting-point with my car via the fastest way.

If you have the same mapping in both places, and pick just same the
start and finish points, you'll almost invariably get the same routing
in the same places. *If* you have the settings about the same in both
places.
I have the same mapping in MapSource and on my 76Cx and seldom get
anything but the same routing on the GPS that I got in MapSource. In
MapSource I seldom if ever use via points, I create waypoints instead.
For some reason the software in the 76Cx seldom changes the routing if
it is based on waypoints whereas with via points it will do ti more
frequently.

How do you convert a route to a track? I have 76Cx and as far as I know
there is no way to do that. And "polluted" with waypoints? That is
what waypoints are for, to control routing!
