Hi I'm toying with the idea of buying a GPS mouse to see how thing go,but I
don't then want to have to buy loads of expensive software to boot-just to
try thing out.

So is there any open source (windows)software with uk maps and where's a
good place to buy the mouse from.

Thank you for doing my leg work but google is returning far to many results
so any help cutting it down to size would be great.

You won't find free UK maps. Your taxes (assuming your are UK) have paid
for them to be produced, but Ordnance survey are v. strict about how you use
them. Look on sourceforge.net for open source mapping programs or
download.com

Failing to find any free mapping software, check out a product from a =
former possession. www.oziexplorer.com OziExplorer is shareware and will =
cost you around 70GBP. You might check eBay for your mouseGPS. I just =
bought a Garmin 35 for less than 60USD. Works great!.

Can't help with the free maps. Plenty of sources for free DRGs here in =
the US though.=20

Good luck

Vic

Yeah.. I had looked @ sourceforge but could not see anything that was
complete.

So this would not be a cheap route to try things out?

Can anyone recomend a cheap way to get in to GPS just to try things out, say
under £80uk.

Thanks
WW

Basic yellow etrex and data cable from eBay - not just a cheap way in but an
excellent basic device - in my opinion it outperforms the more expensive
monochrome etrex models if you only want to use the basic features, although
obviously the other models have much more sophisticated features as well.

Recent UK eBay sales as low as £60 inc postage for a new yellow etrex and
£48 second hand. Data cables from £9 inc postage (a bit more for a genuine
Garmin cable).

Download some free software and you're away. eg GPS Trackmaker
(free)/OziExplorer (restricted free version available)/MapMan (free although
some advanced features restricted to 30day trial after first use)

You can scan in and calibrate your own maps or copy and paste OS 1km square
map tiles from Streetmap or Getamap.

The basic etrex has no mapping capabilities but you can upload/download
waypoints, routes and tracklogs. Uploading saved tracks and waypoints to
the receiver can give you very basic on-screen mapping such as footpaths.

There is a new improved version of the basic etrex model available (AFAIK at
the same price) that has greater capacity, can accept multiple routes, has
an improved trip-computer and WAAS (EGNOS) capability. It's not always
obvious if this is what you will be getting so you should always ask and you
may need to buy "full price" from a dealer.
