am thinking of getting a hand held gps that i could use for hiking and
hunting but also plug into my laptop for higway use on vacations
any comments / suggestions would be appreciated

Lots of GPS's will do that.
I chose Garmin. Started with a Vista but now have the Vista and a 60C
All you need with these is a cable to the laptop and Garmin's nRoute
(free) or Garmin MapSource.
