I have a Garmin Map76cs

How do I follow a saved track?

It is easy enough to see how to trackback, but how do I use the track
from begin to end instead of from end to begin?

Another way to put it: How do I turn the saved track into a route?

Thanks.

Poster, my reply has a sad ending, read on.

>From page 39 of my GPS Map76 (not CS) mannual: "TracBack Navigation
uses track Points in a saved track to automatically create a route.
You will have the option of navigating the route in the 'Original' or
'Reverse' direction."

Your questions deserved a reply and it had been a while since I played
around with TracBac so I set off yesterday to collect an active track
log while driving with a friend to pick up my car from having service
performed. In retrospect, I should have left the GPS at home and done
a litte research.

I should have simply replied that turning tracks to routes and
reversing is easy to do if use what I use - ExpertGPS. ExpertGPS
treats routes and tracks the same and your can reverse, simplify, add-
delete-points, etc. The program is not free, but there is a free trial
and you will find it a useful map authoring tool if you do a lot of
this kind of stuff. But your question was about using your Garmin, so
I wanted to try to figure this out too.

It seemed to me that once you had a TracBack route you could reverse,
save it, whatever, just like the book said. So I figured a track of a
quick trip to the service department would be easy to work with.

The sad part of the story is when I got out of my fiends car and into
my own, I set the GPS on top of the car, and you guessed it... forgot
it was there and drove on down the road with it on top. The sound of
clunk clunk cause to look in the rear view mirror to seem my GPS
tumbling aross 3 lanes of traffic at rush hour.

It took me several block before I could turn around. Back at the
scene, a kind gentelman met me in the median and handed me the unit.
It was pretty beat-up .

I had turned the unit off prior to setting it on the roof. So I tried
to power it up and supprisingly I could tell that it still had a brain
but the display is so badly smashed that I can no longer read anything.

Regrets,
- Doug

Doug,

I am sorry about your GPS unit's destruction. It sounds like
something I might have done.

I posed the same question at the Garmin customer service page, twice
now, but have never received a reply. And, yes, I read the same
instructions on page 39 as you quote above. Still, there is no
explanation, anywhere, of how to follow the saved track in original
direction!

There must be something about following a saved track that is just so
simple that I am somehow overlooking it. The only way I have
successfully achieved my goal, that is, in following the original
route in the original direction, is by following the track in reverse,
saving it as a new track, then using the trackback to follow the
track. This is crazy.

Does the software you mention work with my Map76cs?

Thanks for trying.

Anyone else?

If your's has USB connection, then you'll need the beta version.
Here's my referal link:

http://www.expertgps.com/beta.asp?rc=454L3

The beta version will run as a 30-day trial, same as the released
version.

I don't have a 76cs so this is somewhat of a guess.
AIRC, on the 60 & 76c/cs models when you save a track you can specify
the beginning and ending points along the Active Track. So I'd expect
that if you want the TrackBack function to work in the original
direction you'd specify the beginning point to be where you actually
ended and vice versa when you save the track.
