What am I updating anyway?
My Garmin "Map Update 20008 City Navigator North America NT" update DVD
just arrived in the mail but it didn't come with any more instructions than
that below so I'm not exactly sure WHAT it is 'updating' cuz I didn't get
an original software DVD with the Nuvi 6xx in the first place.
It says on the DVD jacket ...
To install your Map Update product, run D:\windows\setup and select
"Install Garmin 2008 Map Update" & then follow the prompts.
It also says "Includes USB device drivers", "Internet access is required",
"Cable and GPS not inluded" :)
My main wonderance is what am I "updating" since I have never installed a
Garmin product before and none came with the Nuvi. Secondarily, why would I
need Internet access? I've already entered in multiple unlock codes (which
didn't seem to be needed) and I've been to the Garmin web pages and
registered, and I called them (thanks for the advice) multiple times to get
the maps ... why would I still need Internet access.
So many questions ... so little I know!

As soon as I popped the Garmin 2008 update DVD in, up popped a firewall
message saying
NEW PROGRAM Retail Map Update Application is trying to access the Internet.
Application Setup.exe Destination IP 216.252.120.245:DNS
Any idea if and what spying Garmin is doing on us?

My guess is that you have to access Garmin's site to verify
your unlock code...??? But I'm awaiting with 'baited
breath' to learn just how this is accomplished, so we can
include it in a review...

Aside from the more innocent things, like update checks, and perhaps
registration or authorisation code verifications, other likely culprits I've
found are:
Calls home, simply because "they want to know", and less than honourable
reasons like "doubleclick.com".
My firewall blocked that last one on one of my installs. Oh dear, I'm all
broken up about it. Think of all the advertising that I'll miss out on.

Besides the Map update on the DVD, the site lists download and patches
for the unit's other software. Just because you have the software that
was installed when the unit was new, there may be updates and patches
for that software that were developed after the original software.
As a matter of fact, all new hardware installed on your machine may have
software that is out of date and should be checked at the unit's web
site. You don't know how long the unit has been sitting on the shelf.
