I've been away from the group for years, but covet some advice.

In two weeks I leave for Barbados, to start a short cruise on which I plan
to take my beloved Garmin GPS V.

The problem is that my new laptop lacks a serial port, so if I am to upload
track logs from the GPS I need to buy a USB to serial port convertor.

The Laptop runs Windows XP Pro, despite being quite new.

Can anyone provide confirmation of any specific USB to serial port adapters
observed to work from GPS V to a WinXP USB port? It would be most helpful
if it were one currently for sale at NewEgg or other readily accessible
supplier.

Candidates on Newegg seem to be:

SABRENT SBT-USC6M USB to Serial (9-pin) DB-9 RS-232 Adapter Cable

PPA 3312 USB to Serial Converter

KINAMAX 1 FT USB to Serial DB9 (9 pin) RS232 Cable Model CB-RS232

In that NewEgg reviewers mention each working with a Garmin product, but
none mention GPS V (mosty eTrex)

Any insight or suggestions gratefully accepted.

Thanks

I have used a GMUS-3 USB/Serial Adapter with Windows XP, on both my
Desktop and laptop with not only my GPS V but also at least two other
serial port devices.

Just Google GMUS-3 if you are interested.

Thanks. I've ordered one from Directron.

Given that some folks have reported some compatibility problems elsewhere,
it was comforting that you could report directly on XP to GPS V success.

Glad to be of service.
One final note. There is a fairly recent firmware upgrade for the GPS
V. The screen goes blank and there may be a horizontal line across it.

Go to http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-00226-03
if you havn't already done so. Apparently there was some change in the
satellite data and how the unit receives it. This fixes the problem.
