Hi

Upgraded the software in my unit and found that the ability to plan
different waypoints prior to the final destination appears to have
been dropped from the software.

Is this correct?

Any idea why - I found it quite useful.

Just wondered.

Was that the Itinerary Planning feature? Where you placed points as
Favorites and assembled them in list that could be saved? That was
certainly one of the most useful features in TT5.

I wonder about that too.

Garmin's newest TomTom Rider comparable unit, the Zumo 550, supposedly only
allows for one via to be set in a route. They left most of the routing to
the brain in the unit. One can do a new route or add another via once that
single via has been used, but this seems odd in comparison to their older
units. I like to do my own routing, not as the unit would have steered me.

Maybe somebody elses GPS unit had a patent on that feature and it has been
dropped from the TomTom and Garmin? Dunno.

It is crazy, isn't it?

And Tom Tom is going after Garmin in court now for stealing their "look
and feel".

But as the Garmin StreetPilot family evolved up through the 26xx, 27xx,
and 27xx series one of the features that was added and most touted was
"Multiple Destination Routing". Around the same time some of the
Magellan RoadMates also discovered and added that feature.

My feeling is that to be a "good" GPS, it has to have that feature.
There is simply no other way to take complete control of your routing.
I would not buy one that did not have it. Period.

I bought TT5N for use on a motorcycle (used it on a PDA) because
Itinerary Planning accomplished the same thing as multiple destination
routing (MDR) but under a different name. TT5N worked okay for me for
two years. I considered the data to be mediocre and it did not record
tracks but I thought it might get better. Instead it got worse, they
have lost my business.

The newer Garmin dash mount automobile units, the StreetPilot "i" and
"c" series, the nuvi series, and now the zumo too you tell me, no longer
have multiple destination routing. How the hell they can finalize a
software design without figuring out which features on the earlier
products were the most liked and wanted? I'll never understand it.
They are simply idiots!

The Garmin dash mounts are getting dumber and less useful for navigation
every year. They are adding "brain candy" features like Bluetooth, XM
radio, traffic radio, MP3 players, etc. while giving up key navigation
features.

Another issue for me is tracks. Some of the newer models will not let
you record tracks as you travel and download them for later use. To me,
tracks are an essential component of using a GPS.

I recently bought a Garmin handheld, the 76Cx, for multiple purpose use
(cars, boats, motorcycle, ATV, etc.) and it is still a good unit. It
still does multiple destination routing and tracks. I can actually
control my routing much better with that handheld than I could with many
of the newer dash mount designs.

The StreetPilot 2820 still offer MDR and (as far as I know) records
tracks. It is the only dash mount unit I would give any consideration
too right now.

The venerable StreetPilot 2610 is still available new, used, and
refurbished, and I'd buy that for a few hundred Dollars before I'd buy
the $1,100 2820 with a bunch of bells and whistles I don't really want.

Definitely, a GPS is basically useless without > "Multiple Destination
Routing"
