I would like to get a Vehicle GPS for Geocaching as well as driving. I
presently have a hand held unit but it would be nice to have one for my
truck to get me to the location. I have been to Circuit City to look at
them, but I am unable to determine if any of the Vehicle GPS units allow
direct input of the coordinates.

Any units that allow direct input of the coordinates?

Any suggestions of units to get or to avoid?

Thanks!

Dan

Garmin Quest. Vehicle navigator with voice prompts and includes City
Navigator routable maps with full unlock. I'm not sure if any other pocket
size size vehicle navigator has lat/lon entry or decent off-road navigation
features. I use my Quest for Geocaching.

We really like the iWay 500c, even though it doesn't have internal
batteries. It has all the maps on it's internal hard drive and gives
you 10 Gig of space for MP3/OGG music. You can input waypoints by
lat/long, too.

Dan,
We use the Garmin GPSMap 60cs or better yet get the 60csx for BOTH
driving and wallking to a cache. We just push a couple of buttons to
take us offroad when ready to park so we can walk to the cache location
following the arrow and decrementing the distance.
We use City Streets for driving navagation, Topo not really necessary
unless you are 4 wheellin or on long hikes. City Streets gets from
Interstates all the way down to dirt roads you can't really venture
down unless you have high clearance 2Wd anyway.

We use both a permanent dash mount or a portable bean bag dash mount
and connect the GPS to the lighter with a serial cord while driving to
save batteries. Alone you want the unit mounted close to your line of
sight, with a navagator they can give you the visual directions. I also
have mounts on my dirt bike, street bike and bicycle for quick
transfer. The auto mount kit includes the cable and a couple of mounts
and the bean bag thinggy.

You should be able to find a good used 60cs for less than a couple of
hundred. Look for one with City Streets CD included as it is about
$100 alone. The newer csx has a much better satellite lock in heavy
tree cover and between buildings. They are around $400 online new.

All the Garmin units I've used allow direct entry - "Mark" your
location then edit the coordinates displayed. I imagine most GPS units
allow direct entry somehow.

I think it's the built-in-the-dash models that won't allow direct
entry.

We've got two Garmin 2610s - the second a few months ago for $350 off
eBay. Complete with software & CF card, etc. Sweetiepie loves hers,
and she's no tech-head.
