Hi all,
I am looking to buy a small GPS receiver to attach to my car during races.
After the race I would then like to download the data to my PC/laptop to
read off lap times, and possibly generate maps and speeds at each corner
etc.
The software side is not a problem, I can write my own to get the data and
do what I want with it. But I am a newbie in terms of GPS. So, is it
possible to do this with a cheap "normal" GPS receiver, the sort that cost
about £100 and have a serial link? What sort of frequency can they log the
data at, every 1 second, every 5 seconds? Is it easy to get the data out
over serial link? Would the Garmin eTrex be suitable?
Briefly, the requirements would be:
- to log data internally for download to PC later
- small display to see it's working ok and for handheld use
- log every 1-5 seconds for up to 30 minutes at a time
- battery to last for up to 10 hours continuous use
- relatively small
Any recommendations? Am I asking too much?
Thanks
Scott
Just about any $100 GPS receiver will do this.

Every 1 second? My meridian tries to do some smart stuff to keep de
datapoints down. It has a high detail mode, and I think it can be set to
log a point every 100 ft traveled or so. Perhaps that is good enough,
I'm not sure.
Try and download some manuals from manufacturers to verify this.
Also, I get a lot more detail if I just download my logs, instead of
manually save on the device as a track and THEN download. It does some
compression/ data culling on saving.
