Last year I purchased a Garmin Nuvi 250. I have found this very useful but
have come up against a major drawback. Yes, I know I should probably have
checked first, but didn't!

It is, of course, the fact that updates for the maps are going to cost
almost as much as the original instrument. Is there any alternative to this
and is this the case with all sat-navs?

Regards and thanks in advance,

Pat Macguire

In my experience, unless you are using a GPS for your work, as a delivery
driver, etc. map updates are a luxury in most cases. If it really bugs
you, by all means get an update or if the price is comparable, a whole new
unit. In my travels, I have encountered a few situations where new roads
weren't on my GPS, but it was quite obvious that was the case, and I always
manage to get to my destination one way or another.

Same with all manufacturers. They sell the original units cheaply and
have to recover their money on other things. Just like cheap printers
and expensive ink refills.
