I have a database of natural gas wells which include the following fields:
Well Name
Lat/Long Coord.
Daily Production
I would like to map these lat/long coordinates, and automatically mark them
with a different colored symbol, based on the value of their respective
production values.
Ten years ago I accomplished a similar type of map, based on US zipcodes,
using a product called MapLinx by IMSI. Unfortunately, IMSI no longer
produces this title. I have not done any mapping since then. Therefore, I'm
no longer familiar with the current software titles and capabilities.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated,

Mapping this and changing/updating the symbols used (based on external
data) is simple with Microsoft's MapPoint.

That's great news!
Does anyone know if this functionality is available on any of Delorme's
products like XMap?
Hello Tim,
DeLorme's XMap 4.5 will work very well with your database of wells. By
importing the database (.xls, .txt, etc) you can view the well
locations geographically and assign icons (generic or customized) to
each point.
In addition to a vast array of data importing, drawing, and printing
tools, XMap 4.5 works with many mapping data layers available through
DeLorme. These data layers include satellite imagery, aerial
photography, USGS topographical maps, street maps, and others. With
XMap 4.5, you can even import your own map images as .jpg of .tif and
georeference them to the base map.
For more advanced analysis of your data points and corresponding
attributes (productivity, maintenance, etc.), XMap/GIS Editor is
available with all the same features of XMap 4.5 and more. Through
formula driven querying, you can conduct powerful studies of your data.
In your case for example, with the right data attributes you can create
a map which automatically assigns a specific sized/colored/type icon to
each point based upon the production value.
For more information visit www.DeLorme.com/professional or call a
professional sales representative at 1-800-293-2389 to discuss XMap.

Hi Tim,
And at the free end, Quantum GIS, www.qgis.org can do all this as well.
Runs on mac, windows and of course, linux and bsd.
