Does anyone know if the older Mapsource files can be loaded into the new
Nuvi units?

I have had a 76S for quite a while, and just got a 250w for improved driving
usability

I would like to put my old World Map into the Nuvi - (or a new version), It
should work like an intelligent portable atlas.

Related questions to the Nuvi
Is the configuration and file structure published?

I found that I can turn on Proximity alerts and add custom POIs using a free
Garmin utility POI Loader, and found that it created a directory Garmin\POI
with a file called POI.gpi. Also, Extras now has custom POI entry.

I'd like to find out what hacks are available. There seems to be a lot of
untapped utility inside the Nuvi's

I'm hoping that Garmin adds some serious usable tweaks such as data logging
so it can be pulled to a PC for use / review, but it seems every new
function gets a new model number rather than a software release.

I have a long list of functions I think these things should be able to do.
- fuel record application - date, fuel qty, distance traveled, and display
fuel economy.
- Driving/Road distance between to points, as well as straight line
distance.
- a few configurable display fields e.g. Time, ETA, Speed, Distance to go
- able to copy screen shots to the SD card

In the meantime,
the 250W is a pretty neat device, big enough screen, and endless humour when
'she' recalculates the route when I don't follow the recommended route

Hi
Have you seen this?
http://home.comcast.net/~ghayman3/garmin.gps/

If you look in alt.satellite.gps.garmin I just posted how I logged data
in real time to a laptop on my 260w

The old maps can be loaded via mapsource just as they are on the 76S
It seems I forgot, and was thinking of the nuvi as a limited PDA with
limited GPS
