Need a listing for portable Gps units that you can load both regular and
topo maps at the same time?

Hi,

http://shop.delorme.com/OA_HTML/DELibeCCtpSctDspRte.jsp?section=10460&minisite=10020

The Delorme PN series allows you to layer whatever maps you have loaded in
the order you want.

Topo8 has topo maps for the entire USA, you do not have to buy any more.
Roads and streets are included. You can plan both road and hiking trips.

Want some other maps? Included with the PN is some free access to:

Map Library Subscription
Only $29.95 for an Annual Subscription
A full year's worth of unlimited access to the DeLorme online Map Library
downloads of hi-res imagery, USGS Quads and NOAA nautical charts

Now if the USFS maps were available, I would be very happy camper sleeping
in the woods. (I take the paper ones along, never go deep into the woods
without them!)

You want to get the DeLorme PN-40. $266 at Amazon (they had it for $200
on CyberMonday). Also be sure to buy the $30/year subscription, and a
large SD-HC card (I got a 32GB card, the largest it supports).

Remember, even though you can have street maps and topo maps, it's not a
turn by turn GPS with spoken street names for use in the car.

Garmin models will let you load a variety of map types (road, topo,
marine, etc.) at the same time, but only one of the maps will be
displayed at a given time. There's a hierarchy that determines which
will be displayed if multiple maps are all enabled for a given area.
But you can easily turn off display of any of the map types to allow
lower-level maps to be displayed instead.

I agree with Peter Rathman. My Bad. Although I had City Navigator
and Topo "enabled" in the Oregon 400t menu, I was only seeing City
Navigator until I "disabled" it and then Topo came up on the screen.

Thanks to Peter for straightening that out. Perhaps I hadn't noticed
that since I live on the Flatlands/Prairie of Illinois and there isn't
much in the way of elevation changes in my particular area.
