I have recently got an Etrex Vista HCx and am generally quite happy
with it but there is a big problem with Mapsource. When I click the
mapping tool and drag I get a black border and not a yellow border and
so I then cannot 'freeze' the shape and therefore no mapset ever gets
created.I have tried reloading the software (v6.14.1) but this is only
a download update to a basic level of software that Garmin do not
provide a copy of !
On another point that may be connected I have REGISTERED a TOPO map
with Garmin but it is not ASSOCIATED(garmin teminology) with the
Etrex .What do I have to do please?

I don't know about other problem but it could be related to the MapSource
itself. About MapSource v6.14.1 quite afew Garmin users (inluded myself)
have problem with MapSource v6.14.1 and we had to *upgrade* to v6.3x in
order to solve the problem.

I don't know where you can download the older version of MapSource
(someone posted the links but I don't remember), but I would suggest you to
go back to older version. Yes, Garmin knows the problem but they don't seem
to care.

About MapSource v6.14.1, I tried it because I read someone reported having
problem, and I got the problem myself. Not that I can't get MapSource
v6.14.1 to run but *all* installed data MAPs got destroyed and I have to
reinstalled older version of MapSource then reinstalled all DATA maps.

Did you get any CD's in the box with the Etrex? Like the MapSource Trip
& Waypoint Manager? If so, uninstall MapSource 6.14.1 and then install
T&WM and it will (hopefully anyway) install an earlier version of
MapSource.

Then you can go to this wonderful (Thank you Mr. Perry!), privately
maintained, archive of Garmin and MapSource download and download

http://gpsinformation.org/perry/msource/

and download the update to last good version of the MapSource V6.13.7
(it is only an update, it must find an already installed version of
MapSource to update. It will not install MapSource, it will only update
a previous install, and it will not downgrade a 6.14.1 install AFAIK):

http://gpsinformation.org/perry/msource/MapSource_6137.exe

Install that update and all the vapid stupidity of 6.14.1 will be gone,
gone, gone...

The above methods will only give you a world map with coarse detail for
mapping. If you have any other mapping to install, take a Custom
install option, look at the choices there, and do not let it install the
MapSource executable unless you are certain that is is a version that
you want. *Do* *Not* let it install 6.14.1 again.

Here is another way to get MapSource. If you know anyone that bought a
handheld (60 and 76 "x" series models for example) that came with
MapSource Trip & Waypoint Manager, borrow or copy their CD-ROM and
treasure it and do the Johnny Appleseed thing with it too. Gave copies
to everyone and anyone that wants it. This will be Garmin's penalty and
punishment for releasing 6.14.1.

And another way to get MapSource installed is to download the Garmin
Training Center from here:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-04

and then go to the link above, download the 6.13.7 update, and use that
to upgrade the GTC install to MapSource 6.13.7.

The above info all worked at one time, I have not tested it recently,
let's all keep this thread updated if there have been any changes.
