Sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong place.

I'm wondering if I'm being paranoid or in fact that's just the way it is.
Are people with GPS systems being mislead about maps? I mean, 'Latest Maps',
what does that mean exactly. I have found in my very limited experience
with GPS (TOM TOM) that your perhaps not getting what you expect. There are
many models to choose from, Garmin, Navman, Tom Tom etc.. and I'm sure they
are all excellent machines.

Why are the so called 'Latest Maps' not current? No one would expect maps
to be accurate up to the minute. However, I would think that if you buy a
gps in say Jan 2005 that the maps would be accurate to within twelve months.
My own experience regarding maps with Tom Tom in Australia is they are more
than three years old. I've tested this and it's true. So I'm assuming the
problem lies with the maps creators not the manufacturers of the equipment.
I'm posting this hoping to start a thread to get some insight as to how
other users of other GPS system fair.
Have you got a story, how about sharing it? Do you have similar problems
with maps? Can we do something collectively to make our voices heard?
I'm my own opinion, my tomtom go300 is a terrific machine made useless by
in-ept maps suppliers.

if i am correct. all map data comes from mainly two big players, navtaq
or teleatlas

well i call them the wholesalers who sells map data to garmin, tomtom,
iquidance, copilot..........

i trust tomtom is smart enough to buy from the wholesaler the latest
available ones.

we have slightly better situation in here (canada)

being a less populated areas, we do not have the most updated map
compared to the U S

if you run a business you want to assess as much as clients as possible

i trust creating maps for australia or canada make less business sense

Tahnks for the reply,

Just today I was comming home home from a new location. I ask for the
quickest route and all was going well, until!

I found myself in a dead end street staring at vacant land..lol. I looked at
the screen and saw a roundabout....more..lol. I asked for an alternative and
then all was ok. It seems if your feeling down, just go for a drive and
you'll probaly end up with a smile on your face. When I came to that block
of land which by the way has been like that for years I thought it too funny
to be upsetting. TomTom said " at the roundabout, take the second
exit....yeah, into a cow paddock! (no roundabout). Only a couple of
confused looking cows.

I might try and contact TeleAtlas and see if I can get some sense but I
won't hold my breath.
I'm trying to find out when the next map release will be but TomTom seem to
hide from their customers.

they are not going to tell u anything

ask the retailer , which in your case, tomtom

for obvious business need , tomtom will not tell u too and all they say
is that the one you are to buy is the most updated one

tomtom (garmin, copilot, iguidance, navignon.......) get map data from
the wholesaler, teleatlas or navnaq and repackage it (by providing it
with a graphic user interface)

if tomtom releases it august 1, they are not to give u the actual
hidden version date of the wholesaler (of say june 1)

they want to sell their product the rest of the year too knowing that
garmin (and others) will be releasing theirs as well later on in the
year - this cycle will go on and on

In Australia Garmin and Copliot use info from Sensis

CoPilot live v5 AU and City Navigator Australia v6 use Sensis v12
released in December 2004

TravRoute advertise this and while Garmin do not, it is not hard to
find.
