I would like to map out a very specific route, something other than
might be auto-calculated by auto-fastest, auto-shortest, etc.
Which Road GPS units with turn-by-turn directions will allow you detail
out your route to that extent?
Also, do any units allow you to avoid certain roads. Or more
preferably, segments of some roads?
Thanks.

points between the start and end points of your route. I use my StreetPilot
2610 in this way all the time. You can do the same with the SP 2820 of
course. I believe the Nuvi 700 and 800 series will also allow multiple via
points in the same way.
You can also save your route once you have plotted it. The Nuvis allow 10
routes to be saved, the StreetPilots will save 50.

road to avoid. You can also specify rectangular areas to avoid if you want.

Sorry - on second thoughts I think only the Nuvi 800 series(and the
StreetPilots) allow custom avoids of this kind. The Nuvi 700s apparently
don't.

The Quest 1 and 2 allow what you requested, see

http://www.billcotton.com/quest_on_bicycle.htm for setting up on the map.
The unit allows "manage avoidance" also via Menu, Setting, Route Setup.

My nuvi, the 780, I believe, does not let you save routes and you can
have only ONE stop before your destination. And if you go near and pass
it, but don't go exactly to it, you will be prompted to make a U-turn
until you park and fix the problem or hit your destination and turn the
irritating thing off. What a wonderful design.
The odd thing about this is that the GPS 45 (maybe) and GPS 90 would
even prompt you to round off corners and, both would decide that after
you got past 90 degrees away from a waypoint in a route and heading to
the next waypoint to decide that you were past it and it should forget
the previous one and guide you to the next one. So the knowledge has
been there, but, sadly, forgotten.
Thanks?
