Last June I purchased a new 2009 Honda Odyessy Touring van. It comes
with nearly every option one could wish for. One of the well used
options is the Navigation system which I believe is built by Sony. It
has a Day and Night screen setting as well as an "Automatic" setting
which is to change the screen depending upon the amount of light
outside. Early on, I noted that is would often NOT switch to night time
display at the darkness grew. I could force it to go to the darker
display, but the "Auto" setting would just turn it back to the lighter
screen. This condition is now happening nearly all the time.

Any ideas out there on how to fix this issue?

New - last June? it's under warranty. Back to the dealer asap. Don't try
to break it yourself

Are you *SURE* that it switches based on light level, and not based on
actual sunset/sunrise for your location, as many many other driving GPSs
do? If you're not sure, if you can't point to the line in the owner's
manual that says "The day/night Automatic Mode is controlled by relative
light levels", then see if the switching is correct for the sun's
position, regardless of how cloudy/in shadow it is.

As it occasionally comes on while going through tunnels, and often does
not switch even when activated hours past sunset, it is certainly not
time dependence.

Tunnels are set to trigger the screen to night mode usually (at least IGO8
does).
