So, I got my new Garmin GPS V yesterday. Got the street maps loaded and
went to connect the gps to my notebook when I realized it is a serial port
cable and I don't have a serial port on my Toshiba notebook. I saw in the
instructions that the unit comes with either a serial port cable or a USB
cable which is the one I need. Will a USB cable work with my gps or do I
have to send the whole rig back and get one that is packaged with a USB
cable? (An adapter I got at Radio Shack didn't work.)
Thanks,
Tom
I bought a serial to usb adapter cable and drivers off ebay to use on my GPS
V. About $12 if I remember correctly. Make sure it will be compatible for
Garmin. Also, if you have any active sync programs (palm, etc) running, you
will need to turn them off. There will be a conflict and your system will
not see the gps when attached.
Thanks! I'll try that if I can't just get the Garmin USB cable. I guess
I'll contact them and check price. The company I bought the thing from says
they are out of USB cables.
Thanks again,
Tom

That's not correct. The V only has a serial interface.

You need a USB to serial adapter. We sell one that works for $28.00.

TV,
I stand corrected. The pictures I was looking at were in the Mapsource
owner's manual. I was looking at so many manuals late at night, I got
confused. Still can't figure why the Radio Shack adapter didn't work except
maybe they were supposed to give me a CD to load a driver for it.
Anyway, I got a serial to USB cable with driver on Ebay today so hopefully,
all be all set soon.
Thanks,
Tom
