I am a search co-ordinator for a UK rescue group

I am interested in a project to pass GPS data over

a PMR radio network the size of most searches is

about 2.5 miles radius

the data to be fed into a laptop to show the location

of the radio whenever it is keyed

There must be some suitable software out there

but where to find it??

George

I don't know whether this might be of help..? Our company uses software
and hardware from this company - www.acis.uk.com to track bus movements.

The Ham Radio (Amatuer Radio) people have been using radios to xmit GPS
info. The data can be sent to the internet and viewed on maps via any
internet connected computer. Some of the people track their cars
location that way. Ask in one of the Ham/amatuer digital groups or
www.arrl.org.

They can use a device called a Terminal Node Controller (TNC). There
are also Software TNC's that use your PC soundcard, i.e. the GPS data is
converted to audio using a very small converter then the portable radios
audio/data is sent to a receiver/radio connected to the PC's soundcard
and decoded by the TNC software. There are several TNC software
programs available for free download.

Google "sound card tnc" for lots of links.
