My Etrex running version 2.60 communicates fine with GPS TrackMaker
until I put the Etrex in the demo mode. I do this when the GPS is
indoors or to save power. TrackMaker will download a few waypoints
and then stop. After doing this several times, the program will hang
and I have to shut down the TrackMaker window. It also hangs the
Etrex to where I have to power it off and back on. Trackmaker also
has problems retrieving the Etrex product ID when I have the Etrex in
the demo mode. Does anyone else have this problem. I can use other
waypoint programs to communicate with Etrex in the demo mode with no
problem.

I use Etrex (the yellow one) with TrakMaker without any trouble.
Do you use a serial direct cable from a serial port?
Someone have trouble using USB to serial converter.

I am using the serial cable from the serial port. I don't have any
communication problems until I try to save power by going to Menu-
>Setup->System->Mode->Demo. This turns off the searching for sats and
halves the power consumption for working off-line. Does your unit
download OK in this mode?

Yes. I'm using normally this setting.
The Operatins System is Windows XP Pro
My process is:
1)        I start TM (version 12.3)
2)        I connect the cable
3)        Power-on the eTrex
4)        Go to menu and set GPS off (demo mode)
5)        On TM, go to Interface -> Gramin Interface -> Product ID
(result version 2.14)
Now I'm ready to operate (load and dowload) as I like.

I tried it again with sequence you are using. My OS is Win XP SP2.
Etrex is the newer H version (maybe this is the difference?)

1. I started TM (version 13.2)
2. Connected the serial cable
3. Powered on the Etrex
4. Navigated to Demo mode and set GPS off.
5. On TM, went to Interface -> Garmin Interface -> Product ID
(result: "Unknown GPS ID=696")
6. Tried Product ID again
7. (result: Aquiring ID for about 20 seconds and then went to
"Turn on GPS and press <Product ID>"
8. Took Etrex out of Demo mode and put in Normal mode
9. Pressed <Product ID> on TM.
10. Result is eTrex H Version 2.60
11. Downloads etc are now normal.

As I mentioned, I have tried another Waypoint program that works fine
when the Etrex is
in the Demo mode. So I assume it is not an Etrex problem.
