Hi, I must be dense, as I can't figure this simple thing out.

I live in North America, have a Garmin Nuvi 350. Love it. I am going to
Germany for 2 weeks in November, so thought about getting my GPS readied!
It appears I have to buy Europe on a SD card - Garmin site states:

SD data card, City Navigator NT, Europe
010-10680-00
$ 299.99 USD

wow! That's a lot. I have SD cards, several over 1Gig. Can't I buy just
the CD and install it myself?

Would this replace my North America map? So when I return I'd have to
reinstall NA?

Sorry for the basic questions, my googling and reading support at Garmin
didn't seem to enlighten me. :*)

No you have not. You can load suplementary maps on your Nüvi on the main
system disk or any R/W external SD card.

Yee, For a 2 weeks trip, this only makes 21.45 USD per days !

For a short journey, you perhaps don't need the last City Navigator map
version. You can found a cheaper (or partially free) version of the old
Metroguide maps. As well you don't need so much memory, as you can select
map areas you need. Whole Germany is about 200 Mo only.

No, extra maps are supplementary maps which are store in a seperate file on
user accessible memory (main-unit disk or external SD card). You can store
one suplementary set of maps on each media (one on disk, one per SD card).
Each new suplementary map set erase the previous suplementary map set. This
is not erasing nor the main maps or the basemap. The suplementary maps
remain on the media until next upload of supplementary maps or map file
erasing.

Really few information are available on GARMIN's site or documentations
about maps upload. Best is to share user experiences.

You are welcome.

thanks for the thoughts. I think I understand. This helps a lot, you are
correct the Garmin site assumes you know it all when you look at their
maps for sale.

As far as short journey, well, my son is in the Air Force over there for
3 years, so I'll be going about once or twice a year, and hopefully for
2-3 weeks each time (might as well tour while we see them on the
weekends). So maybe my price per day will be less. smile.

this was very helpful. thanks. DAve
p.s. i'll look for V7 or V6 maps, that is a good idea.

According to their web site you can get regional maps as well. There is a
DACH&Czech map which covers Germany, Austria, Switzerland and bits of the Czech
republic, and is snip at the bargain basement price of just $182.

Ah! Thanks, I didn't find that. So it's $299 for all Europe or $182 for
Germany, Austria and Switzerland. phew. Next time I buy a GPS with
Europe on it and buy NA maps. smile.
