I'm about to change cars. I currently have a built in system (1998) and can
see the benefits of a system that is hard to steal! I am looking at Honda
Accords.
The alternative is to go for a car without a built in system (as there is a
big premium on these) and but a TomTom Go (700?) or similar. I worry about
getting it stolen though....or having to hide it & therefore hardly using
it.
I live in London and use the system frequently for getting around the parts
of the city I don't know too well.

Opinions most appreciated.

Thanks
Julie

Doubtful. The "Average Joe" has a VCR that flashes 12:00 and probably
wouldn't want to carry so many devices around with them. :)

That might be true.

Would it be possible to make a small GPS unit with a
basic map in it that could not only be used alone....
but as a "repeater" for a more "sophisticated" mapper
such as PPC or laptop?

That's what I think Id like to have. Something as
small as a geko 201 but with a bare bones map in it
such that I could use it completely alone if needed.
But if I needed more detailed maps I could bluetooth it
to something bigger.

Most small mapping GPS units with a computer interface can be used in
that way.
For example, the eTrex Legend has a basic map built-in, the capability
to download detailed maps of the local area, and can also be connected
to any laptop/PPC/Palm that can support an RS-232 interface (or
suitable adapter) and run navigation software that uses the standard
NMEA protocol messages. No Bluetooth, but it seems to meet your other
requirements.

Hmm wonder why no one has come up with a BlueTooth
model that can be used as repeater above?
