Does anyone know of any software tools that are capable of averaging
GPS Tracks? I am thinking particularly if I have done the same journey
several times, obviously the tracks will differ slightly, but if I
could 'average' them together, then the result should (in theory at
least!) be more accurate. I'd prefer freeware, but any suggestions
welcome!

TopoFusion offers trail averaging: www.TopoFusion.com

Try to either import them into a database or spreadsheet and average there.
Thanks for the suggestions. I've just been looking at Topofusion but
unfortunately I can't seem to find an averaging tool in it.
Averaging it manually in a spreadsheet is an interesting idea. Not sure
how best to go about this though - its quite possible that the track
sections will start and end in different places and be of different
lengths for one thing. Another problem is then to import the result
back into a GPS-type program - not impossible, but perhaps tricky. I'll
definitely look into the idea though.

If the length of the trails is reasonably limited I'd be inclined to
use programs that will plot the different tracks on your PC screen,
like GarTrip and OziExplorer, and just visually trace an approximate
average path with mouseclicks. That way you can easily spot outlier
points that should be ignored and retain as much detail as you need for
your application. Both of those programs will then let you save the
created track and convert it to standard formats used by other programs.
