I'm running behind and I really can't get a GPS from an online store
now without paying a bundle in shipping. I wanted a GPS for my laptop
from a store like Circuit City, BB, or something else. Can anyone
recommend a unit that might be sold at a brick and mortar store?
Atlanta area if that matters.

I have thought about the Microsoft Streets and Trips with the GPS, but
everyone says no because it's not Sirf III.

Thanks.

That should not be a determining factor but I do think the Garmin GPS 18
Deluxe would be a good choice. I can't tell you where to buy one locally but
if they would charge you sales tax you could probably at least pay half of
2nd day air shipping for what the tax would be and have it on Friday.

Up here in Asheville, NC. Best Buy and Circuit City both had a few car
nav units in-stock. I would guess that if you go to the largest Best
Buy in your area you could find one. Also try hiking/camping
stores...like the that huge BassPro Shop there on the north side of
Atl.

Good Luck,

What nav software are you running on your laptop ? Most software
will accept NMEA data. If yours does, then all you need is a unit
that will send NMEA data and a serial cable to connect it. (Most GPS
units will send NMEA data to a computer). Just get one that fits
your budget.

USB style GPS 'mice' are a bit better for dedicated laptop use
because the unit is powered by the laptop. You don't have to worry
about extra wires or batteries. Most of them are magnetic. All
you have to do is stick them on the roof of your vehicle and run
the cable in between the window and the rubber door gasket.

I don't know any stores who sell GPS style 'mice' behind the counter.

If you're in a hurry to get going, this is probably the best route.
(Especially if you don't already have any navigation software). Make sure
you get MS Streets & Trips Version 6. It is far more advanced than
previous versions.

The included USB mouse is completely adequate for navigation purposes.

MS S&T will work with any GPS receiver that has a NMEA output. That
means that you can buy just the software and look for another GPS
receiver. For use on a laptop, the "mouse style" cabled receivers that
connect via the USB port are a common choice.

Some of the brands available are Altina, Haicom, Holux, Rikaline and I
think all of those brands offer receivers with the SiRF III chip set. I
can't help you as far as a retail location to buy one. A web search
might produce a link to a retailer and all those brands are available on
eBay too.
