I've been trying to open a shape file but can't determine where it is from
exactly. What file will contain the projection data? This is what I have,
I've opened all of them in notepad and don't see anything.

filename.dbf
filename.sbn
filename.sbx
filename.shp
filename.shx

As far as I know a file named filename.prj contains the projection
information.
BTW: What do you mean by "I've been trying to open a shape file"? What
for do you open it in a Editor?
If you'd like to know the projection the data is in you could find this
out in ESRIs ArcCatalog.

I'd like to add a note that *.prj files are not part
of ESRI Shapefile format (they are not mentioned in the spec).

Cheers

Projection information (.prj) is optional.

Unfortunately that was my answer as well. The user does not have the .prj
file, so I'll keep hunting. I've been able to open a shape file but in order
to convert the UTM coordinates to Latitude and Longitude I need the Datum
information from the projection, this is what I was hunting for.
